Abbey Pumping Station, Sunday 17th March 2013
Sadly, the third fixture of the day at Markeaton Park, Derby was cancelled due to locomotive failure and a re-run date will be scheduled in due course. However, last minute arrangements were made to secure an “unusual lines” visit to the Abbey Pumping Station 2 foot gauge railway in Leicester, split into two groups. This was the original “third fixture” for the 17th March, but excluded when it appeared volunteer cover may not have been adequate. Thankfully, this turned out not to be the case! Now that an operating mode has been established, a repeat visit will be scheduled in the future. The 30 participants that attended travelled in two open wagons and a semi open coach behind ex Severn Water Simplex 40SD515 4wDM (1979) along the usual running line from Corporation Road to Foxes Den Loop, but with the addition of traversal of both run-round loops and “end of line” at Corporation Road. The coaching stock shed road was also completed to the shed doors. After transferring to a 4 wheel open plank wagon, members were able to travel in small party groups over the lines of the original railway including the steaming bay, the depot road, part of the run-round loop and the connection to the “mainline”. Finally, participants were invited to visit the locomotive shed and record four other locomotives on site.
